Best Practices for Designing New Ephemeral CLI Programs for the Agentic Era: A Proposal

I have published Best Practices for Designing New Ephemeral CLI Programs for the Agentic Era: A Proposal on Zenodo:

This proposal grows out of an observation that has become increasingly hard to ignore: in local and sandboxed environments, the command-line interface is becoming the default interaction protocol for AI agents. That trend makes sense. CLI is already text-native, scriptable, composable, discoverable through conventions like --help, and often much more deterministic than GUI-driven or network-mediated interaction. When an agent can access a local shell, a well-designed CLI is frequently the shortest path between intent and execution.

The gap I want to address

A lot of current energy is going into making existing software accessible from the command line. That work is valuable. But it still leaves a different question underexplored:

How should we design brand-new CLI programs specifically for agent use?

In practice, developers increasingly write small, narrow, disposable, task-specific tools for agents:

  • one-off repository analyzers,
  • local code transformation utilities,
  • structured extractors,
  • file- and build-oriented wrappers,
  • artifact validators,
  • and other small programs built for a single workflow or sandbox.

These tools are often ephemeral in the sense that they are not intended to become large general-purpose Unix programs. They may live for a day, a week, or the lifespan of a project. Yet they still benefit enormously from good interface design.

That is the main target of the proposal: not just “put a CLI in front of existing software,” but design agent-native CLI tools from scratch, on purpose.

What I want this proposal to contribute

The document is a proposal for a future best-practices playbook. The intended contribution is a practical framework for building new ephemeral CLI programs that agents can use effectively in local environments.
